Verisign to buy LightSurf, a camera phone software company
Thread Description:

Acquisition Will Add Picture Messaging Suite and Enhanced Multimedia Messaging Capabilities to VeriSign’s Digital Content Services

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA — January 10, 2005 — VeriSign, Inc. (Nasdaq: VRSN), the leading provider of intelligent infrastructure services for the Internet and telecommunications networks, today announced it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Santa Cruz, California-based LightSurf for $270 million in VeriSign stock.

LightSurf is a global leader in multimedia messaging and interoperability solutions for the wireless market. The company’s industry-leading technology platform enables mobile subscribers to exchange pictures, video, and other forms of multimedia content.

I can see where Verisign is headed with this. Verisign will also provide the registry for domains for RFID tags. Think of the possibilities.. Mobile marketing getting interesting.

Questions....

1. whats an RFID tag?
2. can you give an example of what you mean by "possiblilties"?

Thanks VG, good catch :)

Verisign buys LiteSurf

1. RFID ..radio frequency id tag. Its a chip that stores more info than a barcode and can be read from any place, any time any where in the supply chain. It's a barcode on steroids. Eventually every product will be required to have one.

2. The possibilities I see w/ VRSN is the ability to read any RFID tag along the supply chain and be directed to the corresponding website. Where barcodes are just starting to get their own website through a special Word registry, every RFID tag will be assigned a unique website for each tag. The number of websites grows exponentially.

What Verisign can do with this? Well with location based marketing and the cell phone being able to "read" an RFID tag, every product with a tag becomes a walking advertisement. It will allow a brand to directly interact with an interested consumer. It will allow a consumer that ALREADY purchased a product to stay in contact with the manufacturer once he leaves the store.
