 So,  that is no suprise: http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/05/12/net-us-google-social-idUSBRE94B04W20130512 . I wonder though, if the goal is not necissarily majorly take a bite out of  search share from other social platforms, or if the goal of getting even a little involved in social is to support their core search product with more visitor data i.e. tie a face and a demographic to a google account, etc...because just a little bit of that data in aggergate is worth its weight ...
