Foursquare Rolls out Self-Serve Advertising

Foursquare is the latest website to build their own advertising platform. I dont know about you guys, but I am all for this. What started with paid discovery on Stumbleupon is growing to be a big change on the internet threatening the oligarchs of advertising. I've always thought the 'advertising server' model was a weird one where some other company decides what your site's content is worth. Foursquare adds to the list of social sites with their own advertising platforms that anyone can buy in to. That list includes:

  • Stumbleupon
  • Facebook
  • Reddit
  • Twitter
  • Foursquare
  • Imgur (coming soon)

What do you think? Should more websites jump into this trend, or should we all just rely on advertising servers like Google / DoubleClick and others?
