Story Text:

DMEurope report on findings from the Wireless World Forum that says that on average, UK kids get their first mobile phone at 8yrs old - amazing...

Other key stats include:

  • 9M kids under 15 in UK own a mobile
  • 63% of parents are concerned about possible health risks
  • 72% worry about the money their kids are spending on mobiles
  • 78% of parents gave their kids mobiles for safety and security
  • 73% of kids have used their phone in an emergency

I've only been in Denmark 5yrs this summer, things change very, very FAST..

There's one problem

If kids are getting mobile phones at such a young age when are the kids going to feel the adventure of being out of touch. Why not simply live closer to the friends so that the mobile is less useful than feet. If you can walk it don't use the phone.

It's great for the mobile operators, selling more and more phones, establishing loyalty at an ever younger age.

That's better

...than television. I hear it's getting quite normal for teens and pre-teens to have their own tv-set as well

Personally I think it's a great idea. When I was a kid (which wasn't a million years ago) we used to be out climbing trees all day and only went home when we got hungry enough, now my brother won't let his 6 year old out of his sight in the park. If it helps kids to be allowed out alone safely then they should all have one.

If some company doesn't already make a pay-as-you-go with a couple of numbers you can phone whatever the credit status and a panic button then I suggest they bring one out quickly!

(and I didn't often spend my emergency 10p on sweets - so I don't see why kids would necessarily spend their phone credits on calling their friends very often either - if you tell your kids the phone is for emergencies then even an 8 year old can be trusted not to abuse it surely?)

Perfect for kids

Stops them mis-using the phone

Should of gone scrumping and climbed some apple trees instead :)

8 year old with phones, lucky sods, when i was that age the most expensive gadget i ever went out with was a digital watch worth a few a quid. So now 8 year olds can phone mom and tell her they’re about to have their phone stolen. Didn’t murdered holly and Jessica have phones? False sense of security?

apple trees? pah. where's the fun of falling out of a 6ft high tree when you can do it much more dramatically from 20ft? (or were our apple trees just stunted?)

A mobile won't stop you being murdered but it'll stop you having to walk 5 miles home when you missed the bus, or let you explain why you won't be back on time.

Mayby I'd be too indulgent if I had kids but I was taught my phone number and how to phone home when I was really tiny and I think anything that makes it easier for kids to do that can only be good.

Where I live an 8 year old with a mobile phone is quite likely to get mugged for it...
