Story Text:

Apple was today granted the patent for "Electronic device" and according to The Mac Observer illustrations it looks like a HP Compaq Tablet PC.

he patent was filed on March 17th, 2004 (first broken by The Register in August, 2004 as noted in the comments), and granted by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) as US Design Patent No. D504,899 on May 10, 2005.

This should have the macAddicts out there trembling with anticipation. I wonder how many lawsuits Apple will get out of it!

There have been some persistant rumors of either a Mac PDA or tablet I wonder if we will ever see one?

I wonder what the price would be?

While I'm

While I use Windows, I've been admiring Apple's 30 inch monitor. Just a wistful aside.

We claim the ornamental design for an electronic device, substantially as shown and described.

Very curious to know what the heck is going to inside this electronic device.

Me too. There is a lot of speculation that with the new hyper-compressed Quicktime 7 codec Apple is getting ready to sell video content through the iTunes store. So is this really a tablet computer or a larger iPod-like device for video content or both?

Mac had the first PDA

Back in the early 90's. It was called the Newton.

I remember first seeing one in about 94 (at the time it was about 3 years old), and I oculdn't believe anything could actually take handwritten text and transform it to digital text. Why Apple didnt' continue the Newton, I'll never know, but if they had played their cards right, Palm wouldn't have been the first and biggest PDA on the market.
