Google launches mini search-in-a-box
Story Text:

The Google Mini Search Hardware is now available to buy in the UK for about £2K...

Google has launched the Google Mini, a scaled-down version of its enterprise search appliance, to the UK. The small, blue box is designed to provide a search function for the intranets or public websites of small to medium businesses.

The asking price of just under £2,000 includes a year of support, and hardware replacement coverage. An extra £700 gets you another year of support. The box is capable of searching and indexing 100,000 documents and it recognises over 220 different file types, including HTML, PDF and Word, provided they are web enabled.

May be a dumb question....but if you buy something like this can it be reverse engineered? (I assume they probably would have thought of that and it will be encrypted or something)

I'd assume that given enough time, someone could decrypt and reverse engineer it. It banks on that being 'out of reach' for today's computers though really. If you could find someone at IBM to let you use BlueGene on it, I'm sure you'd manage :o)

The real benefit to our shady kind would surely be the ability to change a file (or site, or linking pattern ...) and see -- pretty much instantly -- what affect that has against the others in the index.

Its hobbled by default

100,000 documents won't get you where you need to go. Its doubtful that the algo in its entirety is on one of these boxes.

Might be worthwhile just to test on-page factors.
