Treat Your Schema With Care

Since the Quality Update, some sites are reporting that they were hit with structured data penalties. According to an article in Search Engine Land these sites are getting messages about "spammy structured markups" which read like so:

Spammy Structured Markup wrote:
Markup on some pages on this site appears to use techniques such as marketing up content that is invisible to users, marking up irrelevant or misleading content, and/or other manipulative behavior that violates Google’s Rich Snippet Quality guidelines.

Which makes sense, I suppose. Google does ignore title or description metas, but lots of other markups can be pretty potent. Specifically the review and ratings snippets, the guidelines for which were updated earlier in March.

I know a lot of newbie, DIY SEOs can find schema confusing sometimes. This only underlines in red the importance of knowing where things go...and knowing not to game the system this way!

One thing I keep wondering:

One thing I keep wondering: The manual action against spammy rich markup: Does it affect *rankings* in any way or does it simply mean the rich snippets are disabled for your domain? I've seen it only once and it didn't effect rankings in any way...

It would be weird if it hit the rankings too...

I would think that they would just remove the markup from displaying for you, no?

weird.
