Google treats 302s like 301s when a mistake is suspected

301 redirects are permanent, 302s are temporary. This is something we all learned in SEO 101.

In his latest Google hangout, John Muller said that Google will sometimes decide to treat a 302 as a permanent redirect if they believe the webmaster has made a mistake.

This changes very little. Webmasters should still aim to use 301s when they wish to pass authority from one page to another, but it does show there may or may not be a safety net.
