Court Hears Internet Anonymity Case

For those wishing to remain anonymous when posting comments online, this case could have serious implications.

"The publisher of a financial newsletter told Maryland's second highest court Wednesday that he should not be forced to disclose his subscriber list and other information sought by an Arizona company seeking those it says made defamatory online comments."

It's a little more serious than that

The plaintiff's attorneys are seeking the subscriber list as part of their discovery process. They're not just going after the anonymous poster(s) described in the article, they are going after anyone who subscribes to the newsletter. Every member of that subscriber list could potentially be subjected to investigation of some sort.

If they win their case, I expect the subscribers to start filing invasion of privacy suits, if they haven't already.
