It's Illegal to Annoy Me on the Internet

So according recently passed legislation, it's illegal to annoy someone on the internet

Whoever...utilizes any device or software that can be used to originate telecommunications or other types of communications that are transmitted, in whole or in part, by the Internet... without disclosing his identity and with intent to annoy, abuse, threaten, or harass any person...who receives the communications...shall be fined under title 18 or imprisoned not more than two years, or both.

Now I'm not sure how this law got passed, and if it will even stand up, but clearly a whole of of people didn't think this one through. Does using an online nickname count as "not disclosing my identity"?

But if I say all those "hey I went to a PR5 WOOHOO" threads annoy me, do they have to stop?

I'm toast

Hell, this could even impact online newspapers with editorial comments that have "name and address withheld by request".

Send me cigarettes and condoms in jail, I'm off to annoy someone now.

I'm Toast Too

Forget the smokes. Just send me twice as many condoms and the web address of those who authored that mess.

You and me both Bill...

You and me both Bill...

Make mine

Cigs and a chastity belt please (don't bother sending the key)

This is not as bad as you think

Read the code. In order for this law to apply, these conditions must be met:

1) The material must be "obscene, lewd, lascivious, filthy, or indecent".
2) There must be intent to "annoy, abuse, threaten, or harass" another person, OR, the person reading must be under 18, and you must know it.

Proving intent is difficult.

However, if you read on in the code, it does seem to make commercial phone sex illegal. Read subsection (b)(1)(A).

You crazy Americans and your

I really doubt usenet will change much though.

Basicly this means if your judge is liberal you're off scott-free. If hes conservative my only advice is to not drop the soap in the showers. :D

I don't even smoke!

Zeezyx, you use the cigarettes to barter so it's either give someone a pack of smokes or bend over and let them pack your ass.

Simple jailhouse economics

Google is really annoying

Google is really annoying why doesn't it rank my sites first for everything. I feel a Law suit coming on.

now there's a blast from the past, amazed its still going :)

I'm assuming...

...that pen names are now illegal, and legislation to make crying illegal is on the horizon.

I'm clear that this law annoys me. The spending of tax money to create such a law is obscene.

That is really ambiguous.

That is really ambiguous. It annoys me when I get an email I signed up for but decided I no longer want to be a part of and then I have to log into a system in order to shut the email off. Does that count as well?

If you log into the system to unsubscribe they may find that a bit annoying hop you used your real name ;-)

pen names are not illegal in the US

until they are used to defraud.

Not a pen name

My real name is BILL and my online name simply has an integrated adjective ;)
