Future Gazing

I am not a great admirer of BT (British Telecom) and I doubt that they could predict what happened yesterday, let alone in 25 or 50 years time. However this article tells us that they see the following ....

* 2012: personal 'black boxes' record everything you do every day
* 2015: images beamed directly into your eyeballs
* 2017: first hotel in orbit
* 2020: artificial intelligence elected to parliament
* 2040: robots become mentally and physically superior to humans
* 2075 (at the earliest): time travel invented

I have highlighted the ones I particularly like. The images on your eyeballs, I hadn't come across before. The second artificial intelligence elected to parliament, I thought had happened years ago.

ray kurzweil has some great books on this topic (age of spiritual machines and the singularity is near). he predicts things like robots becoming popular artists and emerging industries like professional personality designers for robots, which i think (not sure on this) he says will arrive circa 2020. i think we'll see artists and personality designers before AI goes to parliament. not sure though if we'll see either by 2020, i'm a little skeptical.

i think soon after robots become mentally and physically superior to humans we'll see humans merge with some form of AI, sort of like that idea that was circulating regarding putting a google chip in your brain. 2040 still seems early to me but i suppose predictions that far off are almost impossible to accurately assess.

2020 artificial intelligence elected to parliament

We're way ahead of that with our current B.U.S.H. experiment (Bipedal Upright Synthetic Heuristics) and you see how well the algorithms are working, it surely must still be in beta.

I am a luddite!

I fear some forms of artificial intelligence, especially as wealth continues to consolidate and marketers better understand psychology.

Imagine algorithms that can precicely determine how to tell certain stories to evoke certain emotions in different people to lead or mislead them along a path.

Sure you can believe that people are fundamentally good, but people in positions of power are often there because they can't get enough of it.

me too. i feel like a technology disaster of some sorts is almost inevitable.

people in positions of power are often there because they can't get enough of it.

very true, although i think the even bigger danger is in scenarios where technology has spiraled beyond human comprehension. i think that will be the force that ultimately requires humans to integrate with machines -- if we dont we wont able to understand the machines and we will become prisoners of our own creations....the myth will become real (again).
