In the usual Monday evening web-browse I came across this: Its Alex Tew looking (aparently) for coding help

The project itself is the complete back-end development for a new, totally unique website. The system will require a whole variety of features, everything from customer accounts to integration with payment processors. It will also need to be very sturdy, as the site is almost certainly going to receive a huge amount of traffic, and the system itself will have to cope with thousands (and possibly tens of thousands) of customers and asssociated information.

I wonder if his next project will have the same sucess as the Milliondollorhomepage..

Why MySQL

If Mr. Tew is planning on a lot of traffic and possibly tens of thousands of registrations he might consider using something other than MySQL. From my experience, it can be finicky at times.

Well, there is...

"fire-mary.com" that resides at the same IP (currently) as Million Dollar Home Page. There are only two sites at that IP. Also, it was registered on 1/9/06. When http://www.firemary.com loads, you get the Million Dollar Home Page.

Actually, I get the Million Dollar web page. Which is 'copyright' AdAdo, Inc. A copycat.

When www.fire-mary.com loads for me...

...I get the Million Dollar Home Page - http://www.milliondollarhomepage.com and not the copycat Million Dollar Web Page - http://www.milliondollarwebpage.com as you state.

Edit: Ah, it is the difference of a "dash" in the name

some big projects use MySQL...

What's wrong with MySQL?

When AdWords changed away from using it

The new system was slower than molasses in February. Some heroic optimization efforts eventually produced acceptable performance, but it was never as good as the old MySQL-based system had been.

they eventually went back.

As for mySQL it's only as bad as those using it. To some extent the same goes for MSSQL, Berkeley, Oracle, etc - but only to some extent as closed source inevitably limits creativity even for the most skilled.

As for Alex Tew, well, I don't really have an opinion on that.

Actually Flickr runs on mySQL - with a system chaining several databases together. As Claus rightly says though database efficiency comes down to the skill of programmers setting it up.

Do livejounal not use mySQL

Do livejounal not use mySQL too?

a reminder about ingres

People wanting to use a free rdbms available in open souce, ought to have a look at Ingres R3. It is available at ingres.com.

Almost anyone familiar with commercial databases will remember the name.

Very impressive stuff. Well commented code, good release control, full qa procedures, good documentation, odbc driver, jdbc driver, etc.
