Google Pagerank for entertainment purposes only?

Thread Title:
Google Pagerank for entertainment purposes only?!?!
Thread Description:

I know Google PR has been pretty wonky now more than ever, but for entertainment purposes only? This comes from a thread over as SEW

"The PageRank that is displayed in the Google Toolbar is for
entertainment purposes only. Due to repeated attempts by hackers to
access this data, Google updates the PageRank data very infrequently
because is it not secure. On average, the PR that is displayed in the
Google Toolbar is several months old. If the toolbar is showing a PR of
zero, this is because the user is visiting a new URL that hasn't been
updated in the last update. The PR that is displayed by the Google
Toolbar is not the same PR that is used to rank the webpage results so
there is no need to be concerned if your PR is displayed as zero. If a
site is showing up in the search results, it doesn't not have a real PR
of zero, the Toolbar is just out of date"

Unconfirmed as yet

but regardless it's the truth :)

I'd get more ROI out of sticking my head in a bucket than worrying about Toolbar PR - Toolman over at wmw was urging people to ditch their toolbars and put the whole silly topic to one side 2yrs ago now.

Just another little red herring thrown into the mix buy Google, you have to hand it to them, they're superb at this kind of thing and you can't help but admire it.

It'd be nice to see this rumour confirmed but either way it's the truth and people should really stop wasting their time on a useless excersise like PR chasing IMO

Still, it keeps the kids busy while the rest of us build websites i guess :)

Nice catch graywolf!

if they don't confirm it

then they don't have to deal with as many SEOs successfully gaming the system ;) yay math.

Apparently

they claim it is not an official response...

Still bloody useless though :)

Ya Right...

...is what I though when I orginally read the Google says: Toolbar PageRank is for entertainment purposes only thread by JohnGalt. Not that I think he made it up but I thought that was a strange responce from a Google employee.

While people don't understand how PR works they can understand that Google has a 1-10 scale that ranks the important of pages.

While PR has been devalued in Ranking weight in a big way over the last 2 years, it still has some weigh left in my opinion. But its not the PR but what brings that PR thats is important - links and lots of them! To some degree what PR shows is the number and quality of links you have.

Even if the links are bought, traded, or "natural" it does tell you some thing about a web site.

I am glad GoogleGuy clarified this for us:

Quote:
I'd strongly disagree with the statement that the toolbar PageRank is for "entertainment purposes only"--millions of toolbar users use the PageRank display to judge the quality of pages. I think it's also a little irresponsible to quote JohnGalt claiming to talk to some random person at Google, and then for you to quote it as a reponse from Google, which makes it sound more official. I'm happy to refute that this is any sort of official stance.

Princess Bride Poison Scene Flashback

So did some employee send it out, it got published, Google heard about it and did damage control ...

or

Did he make the whole thing up in an attempt to get noticed, and get them to comment on the importance of PageRank ...

where's my iocaine powder

IMO, Damage Control by Googleguy

Maybe someone should ask Googleguy why he's going around using the term "External Pagerank". I think Google simply took offense to the "entertainment purposes only" part. Notice, he didn't dispute the following fact:

The PR that is displayed by the Google
Toolbar is not the same PR that is used to rank the webpage results

Did Some One Say PageRank...

Eternal or Visible PageRank is just that. It is what you see on your toolbar or in the Google Directory. It is very common knowledge there is a difference between visible PageRank and real PageRank and that the Toolbar PR is not the same same PR that is used to rank the webpage results, so I wouldn't expect him to dispute that.

Visible PageRank is a 1-10 10 unit scale on the toolbar and Google Directiory PageRank is a 8 or 9 unit scale (cleardot.gif, 5/35, 11/29, 16/24, 22/18, 27/13, 32/8, 38/2 44/0 [pos.gif/neg.gif]).

Toolbar PR used to be updated every month up until Jun 22/2004 when PR when for 106 days with out an update (longest on record before that was Aug 8/2003 and Oct 22/2000 at 54 days).

It would appear that toolbar PR is only going to be updated very 3 months now. We currectly haven't have a Toolbar PR update for 57 days, a BL update for 7 days (Nov 25) and a Google Directory PR update for 35 days (Oct 28).

Talking about not being current how about back in Oct 2/2003 when the Google Directory PR was not updated for 7 months. http://www.webproworld.com/viewtopic.php?t=7829
