EU to US: Look, We Are Technologically Backwards Too!

As the US is cutting the 108 year old long distance phone tax the EU talks about taxing emails and text messages:

Lamassoure, a member of Jacques Chirac's UMP party, is proposing to add a tax of around 1.5 cents on text or SMS messages and a 0.00001 cent levy on every email sent.

I can't even imagine the privacy issues associated with taxing email.

And the US looks like it is taking a more reasonable approach to stopping child porn, but they may also use the same approach to block online gambling:

The nation's leading banks and credit card companies will soon team with law enforcement in a groundbreaking coalition to catch people who sell child pornography online.

The financial institutions will report child porn sites they discover on the Web to a central tip line, slated to expand next month to receive the information. The companies will block transactions for online child porn or, if law enforcement opens an investigation, help track sellers and buyers.

Stupid stupid stupid

Now that the cat is out of the bag, the kiddy smut business will just find ways to use a 3rd party offshore escrot account that's beyond the long arm of the US law.

The best way to catch criminals is to not tell them how you're going to catch them.

This ranks right up there with the idiots on the news last night telling the whole world they've been using MySpace to snare gang members posting pics online that proved they associated with each other, showed pictures of guns and stolen booty, etc. - so much for using MySpace.

maybe, but I am guessing that those would probably be pretty easy to track as well. US citizens would have to put money into those accounts from somewhere.

I agree though...unless the intent of this announcement is to scare it was a dumb announcement to make. Even better than an announcement like this would be like a child porn related arrest a day for like every day a month straight. I bet that surely would have a stronger effect than an announcement like this does.

I would have thought the best way to pay for something annonymously was Western Union. Now there is a company that ought to have to work with the police.

I just sent money western union yesterday. the person who received it did not even require showing a photo id. I didn't have to show one when I sent it either.

This is one guy trying to be important. There's a long way between one politician suggesting something like this and its actual implementation.
