Google to Turn over Private User Data To Brazil

Via slashdot, the washington Post is reporting that Google will comply with a Brazilian court ruling to turn over private user data.

Google Inc., which refused in the past year to hand over user search data to U.S. authorities fighting children's access to pornography, said yesterday that it was complying with a Brazilian court's orders to turn over data that could help identify users accused of taking part in online communities that encourage racism, pedophilia and homophobia.

.
Now we have a precedent. It doesn't matter if Google's motto is "Don't be Evil" nor if they think that a ruling is ubsurd. If they have your user data, it can and will be turned over to governments that ask for it.

Oh Dear

Oh Dear

This may be a dupe (if it

This may be a dupe (if it is, my bad), but the other story didn't seem to underscore that google will be complying with the court's ruling.

Why?

I wonder why they would turn the data over to Brazil, but not the U.S.? I guess the U.S. should run all requests through Brazil...

"don't be evil... to our shareholders"

> I wonder why they would turn the data over to Brazil, but not the U.S.

Maybe the huge daily fine had something to do with it.

Overblown

I for one believe that Google, or Orkut, is doing the correct thing in this circumstance by handing over user information to the Brazilian Government.

Comparing this decision and Google not complying with the US demands for loads of private search behavior tracking info is an apples to oranges comparison.

Google is helping the Brazilian government track down a handful of child traffickers, child pornographers and hate crimes groups via supplying Orkut login info and IP addresses to Brazil.

These people chose to use Orkut for illegal means, and evil means. They are killers, flaunting their shit infront of the authorities and Google, trying to hide behind a privacy policy firewall, and now they're fucked - which is what they deserve.

Sure, those criminals may just jump over to another online form of planning their destruction of society, but I think it honorable of Google to step up and take the responsibility of complying with the court order. Even though it took a fine to light a fire under their asses.

The U.S. was using COPA as it's reason for needing the data - which sounds to me like the same excuse that Brazil was using.

illustrating the slippery slope

vs. the original quote:

Thanks for illustrating the slippery slope.
