Seriously? With everything

Seriously? With everything they have wrong with the current serps 'this' is such a massive issue that it's worth spending time on?

We have just recently started

We have just recently started doing Guest blogging and the response rate has been terrific. We are providing quality content and only contacting very targeted blogs though. I guess it comes back to doing it right or wrong.

It's OK if you're a journalist. ...

John Mueller made an interesting exception for journalists, who apparently do not need to nofollow their link back home.  The rest of the world has given up on trying to distinguish between journalists and bloggers.  Indeed most journalists are now bloggers.  Google needs to hang on to this dubious distinction to have an apparently plausible reason for allowing some backlinks to be left without nofollow.

By now I think Google is becoming like a religious movement where it's not logic but faith that fuels actions.

I just don't buy the hysteria

I just don't buy the hysteria, Google is just going to continue targeting blog networks as they morph. Most blog networks no longer post 'articles with backlinks' they post 'guest articles with backlinks'. Same thing just a different format. As long as you are writing high quality content on well established blogs I think we are fine. Couple that with Google Authorship and some great social signals for each article and I don't see any reason for concern. Google likes to scream fire when there is just a little smoke cause they don't want people doing SEO they want people developing decent sites that are search engine friendly and leaving it at that.

Unique original image?

My concern with free images is that Google may start evaluting them like they do with articles. Unique original image? Increase in ranking, stock photo used 10,000 times? Lower ranking. If I were Google I would be looking to do something like this. That is why it is best to atleast try and use original images. Google's image search is getting quite powerful (completely innaccurate I know) but they are showing us that they are adding more technology in the backend for image searches.
