Keep and open mind

Yea well it's something thats all too common. People start to make assmumptions prior to any of the forensic work being performed. We've seen instances of

Multiple Algo Hits (Penguin/Panda/Page Layout), Site Changes. Changes to query space and many other factors. And of course in some instances, multiples. In fact, even when you think you know (aka a manual action) you should still dig deeper. Often times when a site gets to the point of a manual action, they've potentially been hit in the past with algorithmic issues as well.

We tend to pull far back in the analytics and GWT timeline to see what has happened in the past, not just the recent dates of losses.

I find this a lot, that people take the first potential answer and stop looking. Never a good idea.

Anyway, thanks for the luv... as U know it's a topic close to me heart!

I wish people would stop blaming their victims

This is a really long post, but well worth reading. Most know how I feel about what is going on so I will spare them - at least for now. I commented on that post somewhere, but don't see it at that link. I don't expect Google to stop being evil, but I really wish people would stop blaming their victims as though they set out to be damaged on purpose. That is how they can continue behaving the way they do - because so many will latch on to any little thing to make the victims the cause of their own damage.

Those who actually go around

Those who actually go around crying how Google was right penalizing anyone and how they are making the SERPs better - those people are seriously getting on my nerves actually :)

disagreed

As I am new to this website and I always believe that the geniune and honest person can become the supreme so Google such big harddisk which knows everthing can never break the internet laws

Radomly lifted

We have a company that approached us.. they had over 100 manual actions against their large number of subdomains...   They sent in a reconsideration request on one subdomain, and suddenly, the manual actions are just disappearing across the other subdomains.   It is important to note these were mostly unnatural linking related penalties, and the reconsideration request that was sent basically said this is a UGC site, we don't want these affecting the parent domain, and we are banning users, can you give us some advice on how to handle the large number of actions.

I thought that was weird too

::sigh:: I still have people occasionally bringing up pagerank....I'm also hearing about people swearing by mozrank and the proprietary metrics of the other various link indices, Oy!

its all just a little bit of history repeating

this is kind of the same way that googles major early profits on adwords were from shady pharmacutical companies...it is interesting how the origin of many great things on the internet is shady stuff ....

Confirmed

Google confirmed today that it is indeed a refresh of penguin...

Content Marketing

As is always the case in SEO. One size does not fit all.

If you are Coke or Red bull or an Airline, then a substantial amount of your success is based on your Brand and all the non-Internet ways you promote it to your audience. Stripping SEO content off your website to make it more user friendly is certainly going to help you make more sales. Especially since you have tons of money already going into branding.

But... if you arent a big guy with a big branding budget, then the bottom line is always conversions. And conversions DO NOT come from traffic numbers. They come from accurately predicting the phrases your client's buyers use when they want to buy your client's goods and services. As I have said since the beginning of SEO time. Do you want a million hits and one sale or 100 hits and 100 sales. Link builders will never understand this simple concept. The client's goal is not numbers of traffic, its not numbers of inbound links, its not the latest and greatest HTML 5 or CSS code that only works under certain conditions, its SALES and only SALES, and its ANYTHING that supports those sales.

Lose sight of the client's real goal, and all your skills in manipulating search engines are worthless. Know how the buyer shops and everthing else becomes easy.
