Among the potential benefits are location-based searches: aware of your handset's geographical position, Google could offer a tailored list of local cinemas, restaurants and other amenities, and maps and images from Google Earth. Founders Note:
location based searches... why not just put a GPS unit in my rear so if I do a search you can tell if I am in my PJ's in the kitchen (hence bombard me with kitchen ads) or if I am in the Bathroom.. and bombard me with toilet paper ads.

I understand the need for 'targeted marketing'... but isn't this taking it a bit too far?

you're old fashioned ;)

it's gonna happen, all of this silent, service infrastructure in the background used to be a dream of sci fi, now it's becoming real - to blame the amoral tech geeks or the immoral greedheads for the loss of privacy is to miss the point.

heh, I am sure you're right,

heh, I am sure you're right, but I already know where my local cinema, florist and pizza joint is. So I'll have this feature well and truly shut down on my phone unless I'm far from home. And even then I would not pay for it :)
