Google is rolling out curated medical knowledge into the SERPs for about 400 different medical conditions (to start). This is only going to be seen in US results for a while, but they plan to expand it beyond the States at some point, in addition to expanding the range of conditions and medical information. Each piece of information they'll display was fact checked and reviewed by more than 10 doctors, including those at the Mayo Clinic.
This is a move long overdue and one wonders what took Google so long to do this. From measles outbreaks to climate change deniers, Google's been playing its part in users getting dubious (and dangerous) scientific and medical "information" for well over a decade. Hopefully Google can continue to use its sizeable search share to promote scientific consenus for the betterment of public health initiatives.
