U.S. Insists on Keeping Control of Web
Story Text:

Well, you didn't really think that the U.S. would actually hand control of the Internet over to the U.N. did you? Sheesh, which is the lesser of two evils there? It's like deciding if tweedle-dee or tweedle-dum should safegaurd the web...

"We will not agree to the U.N. taking over the management of the Internet," said Ambassador David Gross, the U.S. coordinator for international communications and information policy at the State Department. "Some countries want that. We think that's unacceptable."

Yeah, i'll just BET you find that unacceptable...

I'D BET that most British

I'D BET that most British would find it unacceptable if the internet had been born out of the UK defense department and other countries were insisting that the UN take over management.

I thought the internet was

I thought the internet was invented at CERN in Switzerland?

Never mind though, you're right, the british would definately object. On the easily verifiable fact that we're just better than the rest of the world...

UN = Bad Idea

The UN is the most worst, unresponsible, disorganized global organization in the world. If any org should take over the internet I would think IEEE would be given first crack.

No way Nick! It was created by an American by the name of Albert Gore. :)

Battle for the web - US v. UK, score 1-1

The internet may be American, but the World Wide Web was invented by Tim Berners-Lee, an englishman in CERN. ;-)

Finders, keepers!

Finders, keepers!

Didn't Vint Cerf invent

Didn't Vint Cerf invent TCP/IP communications that the arpanet started on? Since he works for Google by default can't they claim they invented it. ;-)

Gore

As far as I'm concerned, as long as Al Gore is in the US, the Internet should be as well.

Finders, keepers!

Yeah yeah, in the schoolyard!

Hasn't the net grown into something which should perhaps be administered or whatever it is, by a global group?

Control? What control?

Do you mean that "Ambassador David Gross, the U.S. coordinator for international communications and information policy at the State Department" actually controls the pr0n pages, mp3s, warez, and diallers of this world?

He must be a busy guy...

Let the UN roll their own internet

If they want to control the Big Red Button they should build their own.

Yes...

>>Hasn't the net grown into something which should perhaps be administered or whatever it is, by a global group?

Who do you suggest?

Erm..

More than one country?

As Claus points out though, it perhaps counts for shit.

China seems to be minding

China seems to be minding their internet, maybe we could ask them to keep an eye on ours, too.

I think we should let

I think we should let William Gibson run the lot. It'd be a lot of fun :)
