Yahoo Last to the Buy a Piece of AOL Party
Story Text:

First Microsoft wanted a piece of AOL then Google started looking to get in. Not wanting to feel like a wallflower at the school dance, Yahoo's getting involved.

Yahoo! has joined the whirlwind Internet industry courtship of AOL, sources say.

The news comes as AOL, whose core dial-up business has been long viewed as an albatross for parent Time Warner, has suddenly emerged as a hot property on the fast-changing Internet landscape.

So what's made AOL suddenly desireable, or is this just more of Bubble 2.0?

Brand Recognition, Traffic & Cashflow

Brand recognition, Traffic & Cashflow (it still generates more money than google or for that matter yahoo).

Actually i never understood why (not so long ago) the wallstreet types hated AOL in the firstplace

It's not that anybody actually wants AOL ...

... they just don't want the enemy to get it.

And if the enemy does get it, they want to be sure they overpay.

all the above and...

who has more *subscribers* of *web services* that are as *social* as AOL members?

AOL..

.. I think partly it is the (big) chav/momandpop/numpty market, easier to market to than tech/savvy

AOL and MSN are close in demographic in my experience and tend to buy lots of tat :O)

Lots and lots of less sophisticated traffic, got to be a good buy..
